The Cleveland Public Library Louis Stokes Wing
The Louis Stokes Wing, completed in 1998, is a 163-foot, 10-story high-rise addition to the Cleveland Public Library, the 15th largest public library system in the United States. Located in the Civic Center district of downtown Cleveland, this addition was thoughtfully designed to complement the original Group Plan Main Branch Library building. Its architecture re-imagines the classic structure as a modern, updated embodiment of timeless design.
The Stokes Wing serves as a vital hub for the library system, housing special book collections, audio-visual archives (including videos, DVDs, and CDs), the children’s collections, the circulation desk, and more.
The building is named in honor of Louis Stokes, a distinguished U.S. Congressman who represented Ohio’s 11th congressional district from 1968 to 1998. It pays tribute to his enduring legacy and contributions to the community.
Several conference meeting rooms complement the central area of the 2nd-floor learning commons.
The auditorium is a theater with 300 fixed seats, a stage, and a speaker podium.
The Louis Stokes Wing of the Cleveland Public Library is approximately 0.3 miles southeast of the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland. It is situated at the corner of East 6th Street and Superior Avenue in the Civic Center district of downtown Cleveland. A short walk from the Convention Center, it lies just a few blocks away, making it easily accessible for visitors exploring the area.
